Overview:
To increase students’ critical thinking, analytical, and communicative ability through
viewing, reading and writing about films made outside of the Hollywood tradition, and to appreciate the international perspective of filmmakers who are consciously working outside of that tradition to express their own sense of national identity.
Objectives:
• To learn about the film industries in different countries around the world, including the historical background, operations, trends and major directors.
• To learn about different cinematic styles and aesthetics of foreign films
Textbook
No required textbook. Handouts will be distributed in class.
Viewing
You are required to view some of the movies on your own. A Netflix subscription is strongly recommended.
Assignments and grades
1.Blogs: You are required to write an entry of 400 words for each of the films we cover in this class. They need to include three parts: summary in your own words, major theme, and your reaction to the film. 60%
2.Presentation: Details TBA 20%
